Generation Z Fund

The Gen Z Fund supports young people aged 12-20 to deliver a community project or activity.

Grants of up to $2,000 are available for youth-led initiatives that will make a difference to young people and the community of Whangārei.

This Fund is about inspiring and enabling the future leaders of Whangārei to actively make a difference in the community, while removing barriers that can get in the way of a good idea.

Step 1.Check criteria

Open to individuals aged 12 to 20 years, living in the Whangārei District.

Eligible initiatives are those that address a need and provide benefit to the Whangārei community or a portion of that community.

Types of eligible initiatives could be workshops, events, seminars, research and surveys of local relevance, awareness campaigns, the setup of community activities, resources for sectors of the community, and more.

We are unable to support initiatives that provide private benefit to a small group or to individuals.

Step 2.Complete the application form

Your proposal can be in any format e.g. formal written proposal, poster or ideas board, verbal pitch, or video submission.

You are welcome to meet with us to discuss your idea before you work on your proposal. It should cover:

  • what you want to do and why
  • who in the community it will benefit and how it will benefit them
  • how you will deliver it
  • who you will work with to make it happen
  • what the costs are that you need funding for.

Step 3.Assessment

Staff will assess the applications and will arrange a time to meet with you to discuss your proposal. Our Youth Advisory Group members will be involved in the assessment. Funding decisions are made by the Community Development Committee of Council.

You will receive an outcome within three months of a completed application being received.

Step 4.Reporting back

If you are successful in receiving funding from us, you will need to provide us with:

  • a breakdown of your expenses including receipts
  • photos or video of the activity or event
  • a brief report on how it all went and whether it was successful (written or verbal).
