Semenoff Stadium’s ageing roof is to be replaced, ensuring the venue remains fit for purpose and capable of hosting high-quality events year-round, long into the future.
Whangarei District Council General Manager Community Services Victoria Harwood says the existing canopy roof at the stadium has reached the end of its design life and presents ongoing issues, including weather-tightness, rising maintenance costs, and inefficiencies in heating and moisture control. It will be replaced with a new, modern, long-span roof structure.
“A new, fully enclosed roof and ceiling will deliver a modern, weather-tight solution that significantly improves comfort for patrons and hirers alike. Importantly, it opens up the space for much broader and greater use, allowing for the hosting of a wider range of events year-round, which will also help with increasing demand at the venue.”
The project also includes upgrades to building services, lighting, acoustics and air conditioning, and the integration of cultural design elements reflecting the Northland region.
Community Development Committee Chair Deb Harding says the upgrade is a forward-looking investment. “This will support bigger and better events year-round while addressing the limitations of the current roof. Future-proofing the stadium means we can attract larger events and create more opportunities for our community and local economy.”
Her comments are echoed by Northland Events Centre Trust Chief Executive Brent Markwick.
“Semenoff Stadium is one of Northland’s most important community assets – a place where people come together to share experiences through sport, entertainment and events,” he says.
“Those moments strengthen our community while also delivering real economic value by bringing visitors into Whangārei and supporting local businesses. This investment sets us up to grow that social, cultural and economic impact well into the future.”
The $7.5 million construction contract has been awarded to Argon, with work expected to provide opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
