Free registry helps Whangārei riders protect bikes from theft

Whangārei cyclists are being encouraged to register their bikes with 529 Garage, a free online bike registration and recovery platform designed to help deter theft and improve the chances of stolen bikes being returned to their owners.  

We are promoting the initiative as concerns grow about reports of bike thefts in the District. 

529 Garage allows bike owners to register their bike’s serial number, photographs and identifying details. If a bike is stolen, owners can issue an alert through the platform, notifying Police and other 529 Garage users to keep an eye out for the missing bike. The system also helps Police identify and return recovered bikes to their rightful owners.  

Whangarei District Council Project Manager – Road Safety Promotion Caley McGillvary said bike theft has impacts that extend far beyond the loss of property. 

“Many people rely on their bike for everyday transport, whether that’s getting to work, school or around town. When a bike is stolen, it can have a real impact on a person’s independence and ability to get where they need to go,” McGillvary said. 

“We’ve seen reports of stolen bikes rise sharply in recent months. Registering your bike with 529 Garage, using a quality lock and parking in secure locations are simple steps that can help protect your bike and make it easier to recover if it is stolen.” 

We are also promoting the use of Whangārei’s network of Locky Dock secure bike parking stations, which are available free of charge at popular locations around the city, including the Town Basin, Central Library, Pohe Island and Kensington.  

Police Area Prevention Manager Acting Senior Sergeant Leanne Wakelin said bike registration was an important tool for prevention and recovery. 

“Bike registration is a simple prevention step that can make a real difference. Recording the serial number, photographs and identifying details helps establish ownership, while a visible registration sticker may also make a bike less attractive to thieves,” Wakelin said. 

“Police recover bikes that we suspect have been stolen but, without identifying information, it can be difficult to determine who owns them. Registering your bike and reporting it to Police as stolen gives us a much better chance of identifying it and returning it to you.” 

The 529 Garage platform includes an optional tamper-resistant shield sticker that can be attached to a bike, providing a visible deterrent to would-be thieves and making it easier to identify registered bikes. These stickers can be obtained from bike shops or from Whare Bike, Whangārei’s community bike workshop.  

529 Garage users can also check whether a second-hand bike has been reported stolen before making a purchase.  

Internationally, communities that have embraced 529 Garage have reported reductions in bike theft and improvements in the recovery of stolen bikes. The platform is now used by councils, police and cycling organisations across New Zealand. 

Whangārei residents can register their bikes free through the 529 Garage app or website.
