As part of the Governments' Road to Zero National Road Safety Strategy, we are required to review speed limits in the Whangārei District.

We are doing this in a staged process, focusing on areas where the evidence indicates that changing the speed limit will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal and serious harm crashes and improving overall road safety.

Whangārei Heads speed limit review

We reviewed speed limits in the Whangārei Heads Catchment.

The review area included the Whangārei Heads Road, Parua Bay and all settlements along the northern edge of the Whangārei Harbour. The Catchment extends north to the Whangārei – Ngunguru Road but does not include that road (Whangārei - Ngunguru Road will be reviewed as part of the Tutukākā Coast Review).

This review also included the following coastal settlements:

  • Pātaua North
  • Pātaua South
  • Taiharuru
  • Oceans Beach

As part of the review, we sought community feedback on the Proposed Speed Limits before we make any final decisions.

Council adopted a Recommendations Report and Interim Speed Management Plan on 27 April 2023.

New speed limits within the Whangārei Heads area are expected to be implemented in the second half of 2023, once Waka Kotahi have certified the Interim Speed Management Plan and detailed design and procurement is completed.
