The Waikaukau causeway is a project to secure consent and repair the existing causeway, which accesses the bay further around. This causeway provides vehicle access to properties further around in Ohawini Bay.

The goal is to provide a consented coastal structure for vehicular traffic. Once the repair works are complete, we will be responsible for the structure’s ongoing maintenance.

We seek to repair the existing structure, where wear and tear can be seen, and stabilise the edge. The construction budget for these works is $100,000, with $58,000 of this kindly coming from the Māori Wellbeing Fund.

We are currently in the process of securing a contractor with the ability to manage sensitive environmental considerations, given we will be working in the coastal marine environment. The contractor’s ability to work efficiently within restricted working windows, due to the effects of the tide on the works zone, will be assessed.

We aim to complete these works before December 2026 and expect the works to take three weeks.

Part of the funding for the causeway is being accessed through the Māori Wellbeing Fund and we thank Te Huinga for their support in enabling this project to happen.

This programme originally also included the Taiwa Road ramp project, which was to install a concrete ramp from the beach up to Taiwa Road to provide vehicle access to the properties on Taiwa Road. However, this project is now on hold for the meantime due to project risk realisation.
