Springs Flat project reaches halfway milestone

The Springs Flat roundabout project has reached a major milestone, with traffic set to shift to the eastern side of State Highway 1 at Te Kamo in the early hours of Friday 19 June 2026.

The change marks the halfway point of construction and will allow work to begin on the western side of the new roundabout.

Chair of Infrastructure Councillor Brad Flower said the traffic shift is a significant step forward for the long-awaited project.

“This marks the halfway point in delivering a project that has been under consideration for more than 20 years, so it’s great to see real progress on the ground,” he said.

The new roundabout will provide safer connections to State Highway 1 from Te Kamo, while supporting future growth in the area.

“This is a four-exit roundabout that will improve safety and provide access to future housing in Kamo East, as well as a proposed new supermarket and shopping centre,” Councillor Flower said.

“It’s an important investment in the area’s future.”

From Friday 19 June 2026, people travelling through the site will be directed through the eastern half of the roundabout and care will be required on this new alignment. This traffic layout will be used for six months until the western side of the roundabout is built.

The project, which is supported by Central Government funding through the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, includes:

• a new roundabout on State Highway 1 with connections to Springs Flat Road and Alcoba Street
• shared paths on both Springs Flat Road and Alcoba Street
• a signalised crossing across State Highway 1 to link the shared paths
• future connections to the upper Hātea Loop Path and the Kamo Shared Path
• access to a future supermarket and shopping centre development.

The roundabout will include additional flood storage to help minimise flood impacts.

The overall project is programmed for completion in February 2027.

Motorists are asked to take care when travelling through the area and to follow all traffic management in place. As with all roadworks, the programme remains weather dependent and may change at short notice.

Award-winning environmental care and wildlife protection

Council contractors, BDX Group, have been recognised for going above and beyond environmental requirements by rescuing and relocating native species on the site, including eels, fish, koura and a rare freshwater crab population.

BDX Group were awarded Environmental and Innovation Awards at the 2026 Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Northland Branch awards.
