New Ngunguru footpath completed

A safer, purpose-built walking route is now in place for Ngunguru, with the completion of the Kopipi Crescent footpath project.
The $750,000 investment has delivered a fully upgraded pedestrian corridor connecting Ngunguru Road and Pine Road along Kopipi Crescent.
The project includes new footpaths, kerb and channel, drainage improvements, upgraded signage and safer road edges, creating a stronger link between Whale Tail Park playground and Ngunguru Sports Complex.
Completed in late June 2026 by contractor WM Construction, the upgrade supports safer and more reliable everyday travel for children, families and pedestrians.
Deputy Mayor and Hikurangi Coastal Ward Councillor Scott McKenzie said the finished project is a great outcome for Ngunguru.
“We have heard from the community about the importance of this footpath. It connects people to the places they use every day and reduces the risk of someone being hurt walking on the road following a number of reported near misses.”
The project also includes new bollards and improvements along the playground frontage to help separate pedestrians from traffic around one of the area’s busiest family spaces.
“As a local parent, I know the value of having footpaths, especially around busy spots like Whale Tail Park and the playground. For some years, I have seen little kids, young people, parents and older adults walking on the road alongside 50km/h traffic to get to the Ngunguru Sports Complex, so this will make a real difference for the safety of local families and those visiting our beautiful Ngunguru area.
“I also want to thank everyone who lived with the disruption while the work was underway. We appreciate your patience, and it is great to see the finished path ready for the community to use.”
