Ko Puanga te whetū i ārahi i ā Matariki ki te Tau Hou (Puanga is the star that guides Matariki to the New Year).
Puanga and Matariki is a time to encourage whanaungatanga, share stories and kai. It also marks the beginning of the Māori New Year which traditionally was time to plant trees, prepare the lands for planting crops and more importantly renew links with whānau and friends.
The Puanga Matariki Festival Whangārei is a special celebration within Whangārei with a series of cultural events that occur in June and July each year. The festival aims to promote events happening within the District for people to come and celebrate together.
