Puanga Matariki Festival

Matariki festival 2021

Ko Puanga te whetū i ārahi i ā Matariki ki te Tau Hou (Puanga is the star that guides Matariki to the New Year).

Puanga and Matariki is a time to encourage whanaungatanga, share stories and kai. It also marks the beginning of the Māori New Year which traditionally was time to plant trees, prepare the lands for planting crops and more importantly renew links with whānau and friends.

Registrations are now open for the Puanga Matariki Festival 2023.

If you have an event that celebrates Puanga or Matariki and is scheduled between 24 June and 22 July 2023 then be sure to register. By registering we will help promote your event for free via the Puanga Matariki Festival event booklet, print media, radio, web and social media as part of the Festival.

The Puanga Matariki Festival Whangārei is a special celebration within Whangārei with a series of cultural events that occur in June and July each year. The festival aims to promote events happening within the District for people to come and celebrate together. Previous events in the festival have included community planting days, light shows, markets, exhibitions, kapa haka, star gazing, Māori arts demonstrations, and more!

Registrations close on the 4 June 2023 so be sure to get in ASAP.
