We’re stabilising a section of Whangarei Heads Road near Craig Road, which has been affected by ground movement, to improve the ride and safety of the road for everyone who uses it.

About the project

This area has been monitored for many years because of ongoing ground movement. Temporary maintenance patching has helped keep the road open, but investigations have confirmed the instability is deep-seated and is likely caused by excessive groundwater.

To address this, we’re repairing the uneven road surface and saturated pavement, stabilising the ground and improving drainage to manage excess water. Together, these improvements will make for a smoother, safer journey for all road users.

What we’re doing

The work includes:

  • vegetation clearance
  • excavation and installation of a shear key to stabilise the bank
  • drainage controls and improvements
  • engineered backfill
  • pavement reconstruction and sealing
  • reinstatement of topsoil, the bank and planting.

Further information

  • The road will remain open, but we’ll need a lane closure with stop / go or traffic signals in place. Please allow extra time for your journey.
  • We’ll follow Council moratorium dates, so there’ll be no work affecting the road corridor over long weekends and public holidays, or during the week of 1 to 8 February 2027.
  • Some of the work is located on private property.
