Puanga Matariki Events

Ko Puanga te whetū i ārahi i ā Matariki ki te Tau Hou (Puanga is the star that guides Matariki to the New Year).

Puanga and Matariki is a time to encourage whanaungatanga, share stories and kai. It also marks the beginning of the Māori New Year, which traditionally was a time to plant trees, prepare the lands for planting crops and more importantly, renew links with whānau and friends.

The Puanga Matariki Festival is a special celebration with a series of cultural events happening within the Whangārei District for people to come and celebrate together.

This year's festival will be held between 15 June to 17 July 2026.
