Wish Upon a Star Community Art Mural

Next date: Thursday, 20 June 2024 | 02:00 AM to Sunday, 30 June 2024 | 01:59 PM

The Matariki Wish Upon a Star art installation project features unique artwork of Hiwa-i-te-Rangi by local artist Josie Selkirk inside a shed located in the front foyer of Whangārei Central Library.

It may not look like much from the outside ... but step inside this unique installation and glow amongst the stars!

Hiwa-i-te-Rangi is one of the nine stars of the Matariki cluster. Known as the wishing star, it is to Hiwa that you can send your wishes for the year ahead - similar to wishing upon a star or making a new year resolution. We want to fill our mural with our hopes, dreams and aspirations for the coming Māori New Year.

This community mural will be on display throughout the Puanga Matariki Festival. It will be open for viewing during the library's opening hours.

Free entry

Everyone is welcome to add to the mural, but please do not touch or write on the feature art piece inside the shed!

Art Workshops

Come along to one of our four art workshops in June, where you can create a Matariki star and display it inside the glow-in-the-dark art installation alongside your messages, hopes and dreams for the future.
