The Whangārei Library 3.30 Flash Writers' Group in association with Whangarei District Libraries wants your best and most brilliant story for their Flash Fiction competition!

What is flash? A very short form of storytelling.

Two sections:

  • Adult: over 18 years
  • Youth: 12 to 18 years.

This competition is run with the support of Creative Communities New Zealand.

How to enter

Write a complete and compelling story in 300 words or less, excluding the title.

Make us laugh, make us cry, surprise us with your flash!

Entry guidelines

  • Entry is free.
  • Open to Northland residents only, i.e. live within the Far North, Kaipara and Whangarei District Councils areas.
  • Entrant's name must not appear on their stories.
    Stories will be judged anonymously; therefore, no personal identification details may appear on stories.
    Any story bearing a name or any other form of identification will be disqualified.
  • Entries to be submitted typed in a plain font (Arial or Times Roman), 12 point size and with 1.5 line spacing.
  • Entries to be the original work of the entrant that is previously unpublished, including on websites, personal blogs, writing workshops or social media.
  • Language must be acceptable for publication for the general public.
  • Do not submit stories written by AI tools such as ChatGPT.

Submit your story

  • Entries preferred as a Word doc/docx file. 
  • Email as attachment.
  • In the subject line, type: Youth or Adult and the title of your story.
  • In the body of the email, include: your name, residential address, email and phone number.
