Whau Valley Dam access closed for slip remediation
Published on 27 March 2023
Whau Valley Dam will remain closed to visitors from Tuesday 28 March 2023, while land stability is investigated, says Andrew Venmore, Manager of Water Services. While there is no threat to our water infrastructure itself, the public car park could be compromised.
“Our team has identified a slip, which is located on the southern side of the dam area, above the car park. We are in the process of having the slip and surrounding hillside assessed by geo tech engineers, before beginning remedial works.
We know Whau Valley Dam is a popular walking destination for visitors and locals, and we’re working as fast as we can to make the area safe again for all to enjoy.
Until we’ve had the all-clear from the geo tech engineers, we have no option but to close access to this site to ensure public safety.”
The Whau Valley Dam Track, which is accessed via the Dam car park, will also be off-limits for the duration of the stabilisation work.
“We need to be completely sure the land surrounding the Whau Valley Dam is safe for public access before reopening – this includes the Whau Valley Dam Track.”
Gates are closed and signs are in place at the entrance to Whau Valley Dam, to protect the space while investigations are ongoing.
