The road up to the Whau Valley Dam parking area was closed on 28 March 2023 following a slip that threatened to cover the car park.
Since then the slip has been monitored to check whether it is likely to slip further and a tall fence has been erected along the road and the edge of the car park to keep people off the unstable ground.
A gate blocking access to the car park has been opened, and the area on the edge of the lake is open again.
The fence closing off the slip is still in place.
The land behind them is fairly stable, except after very heavy rain.
Visitors are asked to use common sense, keep outside the fenced area and to stay off the walking tracks. The concrete path along the crest of the dam is open.
