Rock revetment walls along stream banks will soon be added to the mix of rocks and lush plantings that feature throughout Whangārei’s Subtropical Quarry Gardens.
Whangārei Quarry Gardens
The banks of the stream that runs through the gardens were severely eroded during the massive storm that washed through Whangārei in July 2020, flooding much of the central city.
In late November 2021, contractors United Civil Construction and Digger Solutions will start building rock revetment along the banks, along with a section of gabion baskets and a small concrete parking area. In mid-2022 the carparking at the Gardens will be sealed and have an overall facelift.
Funding for the $420,000 project has come from several sources including Whangarei District Council, the Tourism Infrastructure Fund and Whangārei Quarry Gardens Trust, Pub Charity, donations from garden visitors and fund-raising events such as Sculpture Northland and the Whangārei Garden Discovery.
The Quarry Gardens and Quail Café remain open throughout the works.
Quarry Gardens is open 7 days 9:00am – 5:00pm and Quail Café is open Wednesday to Sunday 9:00am – 3:00pm.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, parking will be restricted to the front carpark only and there will be walking access only into the gardens. The carpark will be open at all other times.
