Give us feedback on alcohol ban areas in Whangārei as part of the Alcohol Control Bylaw review.

Help us keep our communities safe

We’re reviewing our Alcohol Control Bylaw and want your input to inform a new draft bylaw for public consultation in mid-2024.

The purpose of the Alcohol Control Bylaw is to ban alcohol in public places where there is evidence that drinking leads to a high level of criminal or disorderly behaviour.

Public places are areas like:

  • parks
  • beaches
  • schools
  • car parks.

The bylaw is enforced by Police Officers. It gives Police the power to search people and vehicles for alcohol in an alcohol ban area.

Licensed premises like bars and restaurants are not included in this bylaw. The bylaw is not about the location or number of licensed premises or the hours that alcohol is for sale either.

What are the current rules?

Have your say on future alcohol ban areas

Have your say on:

  • the areas where you think the ban prevents crime and disorder and should continue
  • the areas where you think the ban should be lifted
  • the areas that don’t currently have a ban but where you’ve witnessed alcohol-related crime or disorder.
