Port Road and Kioreroa Road intersection upgrade update

A critical stage in the construction of the Port Road Roundabout has been reached, temporarily reducing the roundabout to a single lane each way.

Where possible, we are advising people to choose a different route to avoid getting caught in traffic during peak hours for the next few months (until December 2023).

Other routes include the Okara Drive, Porowini Ave, Tarewa Rd, State Highway 1 route.

During this stage the old Haha/Limeburner’s bridge is closed and all Port Road traffic crosses the new two-lane bridge.

• rebuilding all of the old road pavement,
• building new kerblines,
• installing traffic islands,
• drainage, lighting and other services.

What to expect?

Until December 2023, people driving through the intersection of Port Road and Kioreroa Road will travel along the shore-side of the new roundabout as work transfers to the other side of the road. This layout is expected to remain largely unchanged until the roundabout works are fully completed in December 2023.

The intersection layout will also be changed to a temporary roundabout alignment, so drivers will need to take extra care when going through the roundabout for the first time.

As for all roundabouts, drivers will need to give way to traffic coming from the right.

The Port Road end of Kioreroa Road will also be closed on a couple of weekends when the railway level crossing is replaced and this will be advertised ahead of time.

What are we doing?

Workers will asphalt the newly constructed Riverside half of the roundabout. 

Changes to the traffic layout will enable the construction of the railway side of the new road and roundabout to be completed.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused. In December 2023, the new two-lane roundabout will be complete and safety will be improved for decades to come.
