Murphy's Bend, Ngunguru Road safety improvement work

Murphy’s Bend on Ngunguru Road will have a temporary 30kph speed limit for the rest of the year to keep drivers safe until the second layer of surfacing can be applied.

The corner was re-built between December 2022 and April this year to improve safety. Visibility was improved, the road camber was improved, shoulders were widened, safety barriers were installed. The first stage of the two-stage chip-seal re-surface was completed in April.

The unprecedented weather this year has affected the quality of the first surface which has resulted in some issues, especially on the corner.

The area will be overlaid with a high-skid resistance surface which will solve these issues, but this will not occur until December when it is warmer and hopefully drier.

Until then the 30kph speed limit will be in place and the surface will be closely monitored and repaired in a timely manner to prevent any major potholes forming.
