Memorial Drive - Parihaka Summit road closed

Event date: Monday, 04 December 2023 | 12:00 AM to Sunday, 31 December 2023 | 11:59 PM

Slips on Memorial Drive going to the Mount Parihaka summit lower car park after Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023.

Due to concerns for public safety, the top part of Memorial Drive has been closed to ordinary vehicles while slips and other damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle are repaired.

A gate has been installed about 800m before the lower car park to stop vehicles.  Only vehicles involved in the repairs can go through the gate for the rest of 2023.

The slips are still moving and the repairs will be complicated. This means the road will be closed to ordinary traffic for several months.

Cyclists and walkers

  • You may go through the gate.
  • Be very careful.
  • Keep an eye out for trucks, vehicles and machinery vehicles repairing the site.
  • Stay inside fenced areas.
  • Follow directions and warnings.

Facilities

  • The lookout is open and is 1.1km from this gate.
  • Some walks may be closed - these will be sign posted.
  • The toilets open at dawn and close at dusk every day.
  • Be aware that it is a 900m walk to the toilets from the gate.

Please enjoy your time on our beautiful maunga.  Respect the maunga and take your rubbish home with you.   Extra points for picking up other people’s rubbish.
