Whangarei Film Society can proudly claim to be "the largest littlest film society in the land"!

They will screen wonderful films from around the world on two Thursday nights in September. Each evening screens two films, at 6:00pm and 8:00pm.

  • Thursday 19 September, 6:00pm: Marguerite's Theorem
  • Thursday 19 September, 8:00pm: The Convert
  • Thursday 26 September, 6:00pm: The Blue Caftan
  • Thursday 26 September, 8:00pm: Marguerite's Theorem

Marguerite’s Theorem

Marguerite is a brilliant young mathematician who’s devoted to finding a solution to Goldbach’s Conjecture, one of the oldest problems in number theory. But the day she reveals her finished thesis, a competing student finds an error in her calculations.

Devastated, Marguerite impulsively quits university to erase all evidence of her studies as she wades blindly into the real world. As she struggles with the usual social codes of human behaviour, Marguerite is befriended by her new roommate, who guides her. And it’s through her adjusted attitude to life that Marguerite sees her thesis from a new perspective.

But, without her scholarship funding, Marguerite needs to find a new source of income to be able to finish her thesis.

The Convert

When preacher, Thomas Munro arrives in the small town of Epworth in the 1830s, New Zealand is a Māori world, dominated by fierce wars.

In a battle between tribes, Munro manages to save the life of Rangimai, the daughter of Maianui, a local chief. It is his land the people of Epworth lease in a delicate arrangement.

With tensions escalating, Munro and Rangimai must journey into uncharted territory in the hope of brokering peace before the townspeople are attacked and killed. However, Munro comes to realise he’s a pawn in a war between the two tribes and must decide what role he will play.

The Blue Caftan

Mina and her husband, Halim run a small business in one of Morocco’s oldest medinas. Halim is a master of his trade, hand-embroidering caftans from silks so exquisite, they are like wearing air. Mina is a canny saleswoman, who loves Halim deeply but it is plain for all to see that her health is failing.

But Mina’s concern is for Halim. When they hire an assistant to help with the business to allow Mina to rest, she sets herself one final task. Mina subtly begins to weave the two of them into being more than just workmates in the time she has left, so there will be someone for Halim once she is gone.
