Get ready to be rocked off your feet with The Mutes – a unique professional rock band coming to Whangārei on 28 May for NZ Music Month at ONEONESIX.

Performing a mix of original songs and covers of rock classics, The Mutes will bring a lively and fun-packed event for all ages. The band’s incredible musicians, writers, and performers are committed to bridging the gaps in society’s understanding and perceptions of people with intellectual disabilities.

The Mutes is one of several arts initiatives funded recently through our Creative Communities Scheme.

“While there has been significant movement in society’s perception of persons with an intellectual disability in our local communities, this group still faces instances that result in them being marginalised by their differences rather than being regarded as having talent that can meaningfully contribute to the social make up of communities,” says Suzanna Larmer, the group’s representative at A Supported Life Trust.

The concert offers the community a unique and memorable performance and will inspire all who attend to realise their own potential.

More about the funding grant

“We were impressed with The Mutes’ funding application as it was unique, and clearly demonstrated the Creative Communities Scheme objectives – supporting diversity and creating opportunities for local communities to engage with and participate in the arts,” says Maggie Buxton, Creative Communities Scheme chair.

“In the March funding round, we were pleased to support 10 diverse arts initiatives for the Whangārei community. Over $44,000 was allocated in total in the round, with circus arts, youth theatre, community art exhibitions, a LARPing (live action role playing) event, and workshops in taonga ukura being made possible thanks to this funding.”

The Creative Communities Scheme is funding for the arts provided by Creative New Zealand and administered locally by us.
