Whangarei District Council's favourite 'Pohutukawa Coast' programme is back to give away free native plants.

The plants will be available from 8 June 2021. Remember there will be no “holds” on plants. There is a limit of two plants per household or property resident, to ensure everyone has a fair chance to get a couple.

This year, the 31-year-old programme will offer 4280 native plants, 21 varieties, including the Pohutukawa that sparked a programme to help re-establish young Pohutukawa trees along the district’s coastline all those years ago.

Since then, the project has evolved both in size and scope with a total 82,320 trees distributed over the entire district.

The 4280 plants available this year will go fast so people need to be quick. We want as many people as possible to get a plant so the most we will be giving one person is 10 plants and that must cover a maximum of five properties. If someone has more than one property or is picking up plants for someone else they will need to bring a rates statement along to prove they have multiple properties.

The plant distributors are all knowledgeable and helpful, and will be happy to assist you in selecting the right plant for your situation.

Whangarei District Council Parks and Recreation Department and the Northern Branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Society will assist with the distribution.

We would like to thank everyone who has made this year's Pohutukawa Coast Programme possible. Special recognition goes to the volunteer distributors who provide this valuable service for the community year after year.
