A map showing carpark upgrade at the Quarry Gardens.

Finding a place to park when visiting Whangarei’s award-winning and increasingly popular sub-tropical Quarry Gardens will be much easier by the beginning of summer 2022 - 2023.

An $800,000 upgrade has started that will include upgrading and sealing the driveway all the way from Russell Road to the upper carpark. The upper carpark will be sealed and marked out with 19 car spaces and five bus spaces.

Turning back down the hill, the road’s seal will join seamlessly with five concrete car parks that were installed during last year’s repairs to stream banks following a major storm.

The new seal will follow on down to Russell Road, where the existing gravel carpark will be sealed and marked with 18 carparks.

While the Quarry Gardens Trust manages the gardens, the infrastructure is owned by Council’s Parks and Recreation Department which will be managing the project.

The gardens and the Quail Café will remain open throughout the project, along with mobility parking provided behind the café.

Parts of the top and bottom carparks will be opened and closed as needed during the work.

Sealing the driveway will be the final part of the project and will be carried out on a Monday and Tuesday (when the Café is normally closed in November).
