A $10m project to widen the Port Road Bridge across Hāhā Creek / Limeburners Creek will construct a new two lane bridge on the northern side of the existing bridge.

The existing bridge will also stay in use when the new bridge is opened, resulting in Port Road being four-lanes wide from the Okara roundabout (by Cobham Oval) to the Kioreroa Road intersection. This is expected to greatly improve normal traffic flow to the Whangarei Port area and destinations to the south of the city.

Eastbound traffic heading towards the port would cross the new bridge and westbound traffic heading towards the city would cross the old bridge. 

The new bridge will also include a shared path for pedestrian and cyclists to safely cross Hāhā Creek / Limeburners Creek without needing to use the road.

The bridge will form part of a future shared path down Port Road.

This work is being funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) as part of the government’s “shovel ready” Covid-19 stimulus funding. As part of this funding agreement, we are targeting more than 60% of the work to be undertaken by local companies and are encouraging supplier diversity.

The new bridge will be higher than the old bridge to protect it against sea-level rise and flooding due to storm events.
