Work on the final stage of the Kamo Shared Path, connecting it with Te Kamo village, began in November 2023. It is now complete, and open from 6:00am on Friday 30 August 2024.

The Kamo Shared Path is part of our walking and cycling network, which expands and improves our cycling networks, improves the walkability of our neighbourhoods, supports safer travel to school and provides low-emissions travel options.

The work included: 

  • extending the shared path from where it ended at Fisher Terrace to Kamo Road
  • installing a pedestrian / cyclist level crossing with automated gates over the railway lines
  • installing a 50m-long repurposed rail bridge
  • safety and traffic calming work on Wakelin Street, Grant Street, Boswell Street and Farmer Street
  • connecting the path to Te Kamo village and Kamo High School with road markings, kerbing, footpath widening and new lighting.

These projects used $1.9M of the $12.6M Waka Kotahi ‘Transport Choices’ funding, granted to projects that make it easier to travel in ways that are good for all of us and our environment.

Repurposed railway bridge for pedestrians and cyclists

An exciting aspect of this project was the installation of an historic repurposed railway bridge.

Railway trusses from Taumarunui, constructed in around 1903, were used as a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

The railway trusses once spanned the Ongarue River, and were part of the North Island Main Trunk Line.

The trusses are rare examples of a Howe Truss design and are of notable historic significance.

We are pleased to be able to give new life to this unique piece of New Zealand railway history as a landmark new shared path bridge.
