I was born in Putaruru, a small town in New Zealand’s central North Island. I was raised and educated both there and in Rotorua before studying horticulture at Massey University.
On moving to Whangārei more than 30 years ago, I immediately became involved in a wide range of community organisations. I was a Council Parks employee and have worked for a number of businesses in the city.
I was first elected to Whangarei District Council in 2004, which led to committee representation on more than 10 arts, environmental, sporting and charitable community groups.
I served two terms as a councillor before taking a break, and then won the mayoralty of Whangārei in 2013. I am currently serving my third term.
