Beginning of Tamaterau walkway

The short Tamaterau coastal walk lies below the canopy of mature pohutukawa trees as it hugs the rocky harbour coastline, with views toward the upper harbour.

It is a surfaced and/or mown grass route that is easily accessible under most weather conditions.

The scenic drive runs along the edge of Whangārei harbour through the settlement of Waikaraka to Tamaterau, which is well signposted.

A public carpark access to the Devonshire Reserve and the beach is by way of a turnoff to the right at the point where the road curves in a left hand bend.

What to expect

  • A good walking surface which will suit less able visitors, but there is a gradient when leaving the car park.
  • This is a safe, peaceful walk with good facilities, including toilets.

Tamaterau to Scott Road

Grade:        1
Time:          20 minutes (one-way)
Distance:    500 metres

The walkway begins behind the ‘Devonshire Reserve’ sign in the car park at Tamaterau.

After an initial short rise, the surfaced path levels to follow the coast under the canopy of mature pohutukawa trees.

Half way along, the walkway opens to become a wider, mown grass reserve. It ends at the attractive boat ramp, at the end of Scott Road.
