GIS

A computerised mapping system: Geographical Information System (GIS) has been developed to help to provide land information to the ratepayers, public and council staff.

Information

GIS presents property and land information in an easily recognisable and efficient way by using maps.

It is based on cadastral parcel surveys from Land Information NZ with a multitude of other associated property information derived from Council's property database and external sources.

The data is diverse and includes aerial photos, legal descriptions, pipeline services, hazard zones, rates, subdivision information, topographic features, district plan zonings, population statistics, archeological sites and much much more.

Different sorts of data can be combined and analysed to meet the needs of any particular request. We generally use it efficiently on computers screens but in addition, it can be printed as maps such as those provided as part of a project information memorandum (PIM) or land information memorandum (LIM), Council agenda, or for public meetings.

The public can access a lot of this information via the WDC website. Look for the Maps tab. Here there are many static maps pre-generated like the District Plan maps. Another link called GIS Maps takes you to other various collections of map data on the dynamic GIS website and are grouped in sections such as: Standard, Land Resources, District Plan and Hazards. All areas include colour and black and white aerial photos.

Depending on the copyright restrictions, data can also be provided in digital format, making it suitable for engineers, surveyors, planners and Council's own contractors.

Maps

General property maps of your own area are available from the Customer Services counter in Forum North.

Specific map requests and analysis can also be done but do require some design and consultation to determine exactly what is required. These can be printed up to a large size (A0 or about 84 x 120 cms). There will have to be fees for this work.

Costs

There are fees for these services and are reviewed by council. These charges are available from Customer Services or published on council's website.

Alternatively, maps and property information can also be obtained via the GIS website, which can be accessed by going to the Maps section of the general WDC website. Please read the introduction to the GIS section, the disclaimer and use the link to Help if you need to.

Spend some time getting to know the GIS website. Best of all, saving and printing the maps and aerials is free!
