Since its completion in 2002, the ASB Leisure Centre, which resulted from a partnership between Sport Northland and WDC, has been enjoyed by many Northlanders.

The Sport Northland-owned and managed facility at Kensington underwent a near $7 million redevelopment in 2002, which included a 65 per cent increase in stadium floor space, new rollaway bleacher seating for major events, a new imported wooden sports floor, stadium support facilities (multi-purpose rooms, changing rooms, canteen, toilets, storage and office areas), an indoor climbing wall, space for professional services (physiotherapy, childcare, sport administration, café and tertiary sports programme) and a central reception and concourse linking Genesis Energy Kensington Stadium with Kensington Fitness.

The centre has exceeded all expectations mixing a high level of community use with high profile events. The city has benefited from events such as the National Young Farmer of the Year (televised), National week long training camps for both the Silver Ferns and the Tall Blacks, Oceania Table Tennis Championships, plus numerous trade shows and a wide variety of dinner functions.

As the largest fitness centre in Northland Kensington Fitness boasts a large fitness floor, fully equipped cardio theatre, Les Mills Group Fitness Programmes, three glass backed squash courts along with friendly, qualified staff.
