Onerahi is a flourishing suburb of Whangarei with a village-like atmosphere and an active community. It has a busy shopping centre and many residential areas with unique harbour views.
The main land use proposals for this area are as follows.
Extension of Business 3
This proposal covers the area to the west and north of the Onerahi shops.
Additional commercial development at this site is considered appropriate as it is currently providing for a growing population. It also caters for people passing through to the airport.
Extension of Living 1 and changes to Living 3 Environments
The area covered is east of Riverside Drive and the recommendation is that the existing Living 1 Environment to the south-east is extended to incorporate the newly-proposed area.
Creation of new Living 2 Zone
The proposed Living 2 zone covers the area on the east side of Onerahi Road across from the shops. All necessary infrastructure is existing. The shops, as well as a range of services, including public transport, are in close proximity to the proposed area.
Creation of new Rural Residential Zone
This proposal covers the area west of Old Parua Bay Road, to Mackesy Road and provides a buffer zone between the urban form of development and the countryside. The remainder of the study area should be retained as Countryside.
