Whangarei District Council (Council) is developing a two part climate change strategy incorporating:
- A corporate sustainability strategy with the focus of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts of the delivery of Council services; and
- A climate change adaptation strategy to prepare the district for the effects of climate change.
Council has adopted Part One, the corporate sustainability strategy which looks at sustainability holistically.
Acknowledging climate change is a serious environmental issue, mitigation is a key component of this strategy.
The initial actions focus on raising awareness and then reducing our climate change impact.
The strategy helps us prepare for the nation's developing climate change programme and contribute to meeting New Zealand's international climate change commitments.
Council is ideally placed to make a meaningful contribution towards greater sustainability and reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) dependency of our organisation.
Council is a large employer, consumer, customer, major owner of assets and a major energy user in our growing district.
This commitment to sustainability complements existing commitments such as our role as a Fair Trade District.
Our corporate sustainability strategy is intended to be a living document that can be proactive to new opportunities that drive efficiency and sustainability.
