This page contains information about our Coastal Management Strategy for the Whangarei district.
Updated: 1/07/2013 4:16 p.m.
The Coastal Management Strategy provides guidance for how we use and protect the district's unique coastal environment over the next 20 to 50 years.
It provides a series of district-wide and local principles for coastal management within a framework of partnership and develops objectives, policies and implementation measures.
It encapsulates many important management concepts such as education, awareness, sustainable land use practices and avoids the limitations of the concept of protection.

The strategy also provides a framework for the preparation of Coastal Structure Plans in local communities. Initially, Structure Plans concentrate on high priority areas, where there are potential threats to how we live, work, play or protect the coastal environment. These plans are prepared in close consultation with residents, interested parties and through partnerships with the community.
