This page explains how you can listen to our website using a programme called BrowseAloud, which is free to download for our customers.

BrowseAloud 'speaks' web pages for those who find it difficult to read text on screen and users can get a definition of words by using the dictionary feature in BrowseAloud. The programme is of particular benefit to those:
- with Dyslexia.
- with literacy difficulties.
- with mild visual impairments.
- for whom English is a second language.
Once BrowseAloud is downloaded onto your computer it works by speaking the words as a cursor moves over the selected text.

How does it work?
Once downloaded, the BrowseAloud icon will appear in the system tray, which is usually found in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
By simply placing the mouse cursor over the text, the sentence will be read aloud and highlighted as it read aloud. You can choose to listen to selected sections of text or the entire page from where your cursor is pointed.
Customise your BrowseAloud settings
To customise your BrowseAloud settings, right click on the BrowseAloud icon and choose 'Open BrowseAloud settings' from the menu. There are a number of options, including:
- change the speed of the voice.
- change the colours used in text highlighting.
- save text as an MP3 file.
- have links identified.
- customise pronunciations.
You can also turn off the automatic speaking of sentences and turn on the dictionary feature. Simply highlight a word, right-click and select 'Dictionary Definition'.
