Sewage spill into Waipu Estuary

A power failure at the Hammon Road sewage pumping station has caused up to 15 cubic metres of sewage to spill into the Waipu Estuary and people are advised to take sensible hygiene precautions if they come into contact with estuary water.

Swimmers should stay out of the water for the next five days or  until water tests show that it is safe to swim.
People involved in kayaking and dingy sailing on the estuary should not put their heads under the water and should follow the same advice as for swimmers.
People who have contact with sewage-contaminated water should always thoroughly wash and dry their hands with soap and water afterwards.
Open cuts or sores should be kept clean and covered with waterproof sticking plasters.  If a cut develops redness, swelling, or infection seek immediate medical attention.
Do not collect shellfish likely to be contaminated with human sewage for at least 28 days from the time of contamination.
It is best not to catch and/or eat fish caught in the estuary because of the health risks for 5 days from the time the sewage spill ceases.
Signs have been erected in the area.  Water testing will continue and the signs will be removed when the water has tested clear for five days in a row.
