The Mayoral Challenge is a highlight event of Bike Wise Month. Throughout February, cities and towns from all over New Zealand will compete to get the most people riding along with their Mayor. The District will earn one point for each participating cyclist.

In Whangarei, Mayor Morris Cutforth will hop in the saddle and lead the Challenge at Pohe Island on Sunday 20 February starting at 9.30am.

"I am very pleased to be taking part in this event, " he said.

"I want to see our city become more bicycle and pedestrian friendly. It is a matter very close to my heart, and a bit of fresh air and exercise is good for everyone's heart! It's going to be great fun and I am really looking forward to seeing lots of people there!"

The cycle circuit is approximately 1km on gravel and grass with the option of doing continuous circuits. Not only will participants help boost Whangarei's points tally, they will also get to enjoy having the More FM crew there, food and the chance to win an Avanti bike valued at $650 and a child's bike and helmet, along with some other great spot prizes.

Janine Moy, Sport Northland's Community Recreation Manager says the Challenge is a great opportunity to have fun and be active while showing support for cycling in Whangarei. Cyclists can bike the route at their own pace and are encouraged to just enjoy the ride and the atmosphere.

"Cycling is a healthy and fun way to get around, and you get extra brownie points for being environmentally friendly! If you don't usually cycle, this would be a great opportunity to discover its joys! So dig that bike out of the shed, or borrow one, and come along."
