A 50% New Zealand Transport Agency subsidy on top of the $1 million Council allocated towards sealing part of Wright Road this year means the entire road will be sealed this financial year.

Council Roading Manager Jeff Devine said "works are well under way and the first of four sections were sealed last week. We hope to have the second section sealed before Christmas, weather dependant.

“It will be completely sealed before April next year.”

Council’s allocation of $1million to the job this year was the first of a 10-year, $1million-a-year programme of seal extensions included in its Long Term Plan 2018-28, which was consulted upon and approved this year.

This time last year Council was celebrating funding to seal six sections of the road (running past houses), received after dust was included as a consideration in funding applications received by the NZTA.

The Agency included dust in its criteria in September 2016 and Whangarei District Council was the first to apply for and receive funding.
