Waipu Cove stormwater investigation

Residents in Waipu Cove are being invited to attend a community meeting to discuss possible solutions to local flooding risks.

Residents in Waipu Cove are being invited to attend a community meeting to discuss possible solutions to local flooding risks.

Flooding in the area is caused by the low lying land, the effect of high tides on the stormwater network and changes made to the water course over the years.

Bream Bay Ward Councillor Shelley Deeming said that part of the problem with the Waipu Cove drainage is that the main stormwater drain flows into a channel that used to be part of the Waipu River. The channel lies within Department of Conservation land and is slowly filling in with mangroves, sand and sediment.

“All of this means that stormwater from Waipu Cove can’t escape easily, especially during high tides.

This situation is expected to worsen with increasing sea levels, so we need to plan possible solutions for it now,” Councillor Deeming said.

“Council engaged engineering consultants Opus, to undertake a study to assess solutions to mitigate the risk of flooding, and their report has been sent to Waipu Cove residents.

“The engineer’s report is the first part of the process and gives us the technical side of the story and now we need to discuss that with the community to understand their issues.

“The meeting will be held at the Waipu Cove Surf Life Saving Club from 3pm - 5pm on Friday 15 January and we are keen for all interested community members to come along,” she said.

“The investigations are being carried out as the start of a longer term planning process that takes into account the anticipated sea level rises that will occur over the next 100 years.

“We don’t necessarily need to do anything now, but we do need to start planning,” said Councillor Deeming.
