Work is underway to realign the sewer line that services the Town Basin shops and restaurants, in preparation for the development of the Hundertwasser Wairau Maori Arts Centre (HWMAC).

Council's project engineer Rachael Mannion said that there are several existing services along Quayside that are within the footprint of the new HWMAC building, which must be realigned before any construction can begin.

“The new sewer line connects to the existing line outside Mokaba and then the line heads towards the Canopy Bridge, across the existing carpark and connects into the existing sewer manhole opposite John St,” said Ms Mannion.

The work is being carried out by Council's contractor HydroTech who is planning to be on the car park side of Te Kakano by the end of January.

“We are aiming to minimise disruption in the Town Basin and the carpark by completing the work in sections. Each 6-to-12 metre section of pipe, will be completed and backfilled before the next section is started,” she said.
