Whangarei’s rural fire volunteers were officially honoured at a special presentation by Whangarei District Council last week.

Rural Fire Services were previously a Council responsibility until July 1 this year, when Fire and Emergency New Zealand amalgamated the New Zealand Fire Service and Rural Fire into one organisation.

The Council thanked rural fire volunteers on behalf of the community, for their dedication and commitment. Each member was also presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Her Worship the Mayor Sheryl Mai.

Honorary Lifetime Membership Awards were also given to Gary Martin for his contribution to Whananaki Rural Fire and Murray Johnstone for his contribution to Maungakaramea Rural Fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand representatives attended the presentation and welcomed the volunteers into the new organisation.
