Kaumatua Winiwini Kingi and Gene Tautari blessed the upgraded Drummond, Dobbie and Ross tracks on Parihaka and Tamariki from Te Kapehu Whetu performed waiata and haka in celebration.

The $451,000 track renewals were led by PlantPro & Sons who worked closely with Northland Park Care to improve drainage and surfaces, install box steps and widen and level the tracks which are very popular with walkers and runners.

Working on a site that is of such cultural significance (Parihaka was if not the largest pa in New Zealand, then certainly one of the largest) required resource consents, consultation with hapu of the area, Ngati Kahu O Torongare, archeological assessments and Heritage New Zealand (HNZ) permission.

You can read more about the walkways in the Mount Parihaka Scenic Reserve on our website (link below).
