New bridge opening postponed

The recent spell of bad weather, that caused havoc across the region, has slowed progress on the completion of Whangarei’s new walk/cycle bridge across the Waiarohia Stream.

Group Manager District Living Paul Dell said that the opening planned for Saturday 2 August has had to be postponed, as a result of time lost onsite during the recent storm event.

“Naturally it’s disappointing. We want to get the walkway open so people can enjoy it, but we need to make sure that everything is finished off to high standard and the rain and wind have set us back.

“Just before the rain set in, the central section of the bridge, that will move to allow boats to pass up and down the stream, was lifted into place,” he said.

“With the central section now in place we can really see the beautiful curve of the bridge.

“On a positive note moving the opening back a few weeks will mean that we will be into the spring, with the weather warming up, and more people out and about.

“Construction is full steam ahead and we will announce a new date for the opening as soon as we can,” said  Mr Dell.
