Council Rubbish Bags are a New Colour

This page contains an update about Council Rubbish Bags being a new colour and look. The old bags will still be collected.

Council’s official rubbish bags are changing colour!

The new bags are stronger and the new bright blue colour will make them easier for the runners to spot as they travel around our District collecting the rubbish.

The old official grey bags will still get collected and retailers will still be selling existing stock of old bags - please use those first. The arrival of the blue bags on the shelves will depend on how much stock each retailer currently holds.

The price is still $2.80 for the large bags and $1.80 for the small bags.

Last year over 1 million Council bags were collected from the kerbside in Whangārei and using the small bags is a great way to save money and help reduce the amount of waste you generate. If your retailer doesn’t currently stock these then ask them to get some in.

Council has decided to stick with using plastic bags for their official rubbish bags as they have a smaller environmental impact than paper bags. Less energy is used in the manufacturing process and during transportation. Paper bags also break down in the landfill and produce global warming gases.
