Nineteen new carparks are now available in the middle of Whangarei, where the old TAB building used to be on the Vine Street/Rose Street carpark.
The old exit (onto Rose Street) has also been closed in, allowing three car parks to be built where it was.
The new layout allows cars to get into and out of the carpark via Vine street. The driveway closer to the Bank Street end of Vine Street is for inwards traffic, and the driveway to the Walton Street end of the carpark is for outwards traffic.
The changes will be well sign posted but users are asked to be understanding of anyone who gets caught going the wrong way in the first week or so.
Overall Council has added to the number of city centre carparks over the past term.
In the past few years 204 carparks have been added at Carruth Street and at Dent Street (on the old Neil Group site), with the 20 in Vine Street bringing the total to 225.
Even with 112 carparks being lost to the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery and Laneway projects, the net gain is 82 carparks.
In addition, we have added 272 car parks at Pohe Island, on the city fringe.
