A feast of local food, music and art activities will delight visitors to this year’s Matariki Whanau Festival at the Town Basin on Saturday 17 June.
WDC Community Development Chairwoman Cherry Hermon said that the Whanau Festival has become the cornerstone of the district’s Matariki celebrations.
“The Matrirki Festival runs from early June until August and involves dozens of Whangarei - based events that entertain local people, embrace our Maori culture and bring people into our District.
“Council’s Venues and Events team, markets these events, held by a range of people and organisations, under the Matariki Festival banner – just the same as we market a range of independent events for the Endless Summer Festival. Most are not Council events, but we pull them all together to make sure everyone gets to know about them.
With the British & Irish Lions Series on at the same time we are expecting even more visitors this year,” said Councillor Hermon.
We are working with Creative Northland who will bring a wealth of cultural and artistic knowledge to this event.
We have an awesome line up from inlcuding Troy Kingi, JGeeks, Otium and Izaia & Huia, and Hatea and Te Puu Ao Kapa Haka groups will all be performing.
The whanau festival embraces art and education with teams from Ngati Hau Health and Social Services and Kohungahunga.
Tamariki can try their hand at poi and Flax flower making with Creative Northland, and the Whangarei Libraries team will be making Matariki kite.
“Topped off with activities like free face painting and Planetarium North’s Stargazers guide to Matariki and local food, crafts and clothing stalls there’s something for everyone,” Councillor Hermon said.
Be sure to follow the Matariki Festival Facebook page and keep up to date with all events around our town.
