The liberty swing – designed so that people in wheel chairs can feel like they are flying- is back open for business again at the Town Basin Playground.

Donated to Whangarei City by the Variety Club in 2007, the swing lets people who are wheel-chair bound enjoy one of the great sensations of childhood, swooping through the air, weightlessly.

People in wheel chairs can roll onto the swing and clip themselves and their chair in, or those who do not need to use their chair can secure themselves to a fold-down seat in the swing.

In recent months it had been out of commission while the special keys that release it were replaced after the first few sets went missing.

While the perimeter fence around the swing is unlocked during daylight hours the keys are still required to free up the chair.  They can be obtained, free of charge, from the Information Centre at Te Manawa – The Hub.
