The Hikurangi Multi-Use Hard Court is now complete and just waiting for a few things to be sorted out behind the scenes before it officially opens.
Last year the Hikurangi Tennis Club (which had gone into recess) sold its tennis courts to Council for $1 on the basis that Council would upgrade them into a multi-use facility for the community.
The old asphalt surface was ripped up and levelled, a 'dynamic aggregate surface' (a scientific arrangement of gravel in different layers designed to provide a good support for the turf) was laid and 3-4m high fences were installed. Court lighting is proposed and will be installed once resource consent is granted.
A number of codes including hockey, tennis, netball, futsal, rugby and football (for wet weather training) are all poised to use the space.
The court was constructed by Hutton and Cameron Contractors and the artificial surface installed by Game On Turf Ltd. It is the size of two tennis courts. Different areas have different colours and the whole lot is held down by tonnes of fine sand laid over the turf and swept down into the fibres.
Reports back are that the community is pleased to see this investment made in the Hikurangi township and keen to start using the surface.
