Partnership Funding - Waipu Croquet

​The increasingly popular Waipu Croquet Club will have its own clubrooms, complete with power, running water, toilets, a kitchen, a main room and deck by the time it turns 100, in 2021. 

With a $80,000 grant from Council’s Partnership Fund, added to $58,000 from fund raising, the club has now applied to the Lotteries Commission and Foundation North for the remaining amount needed for their $243,000 build.

The club has more than 50 members, including grandchildren of people who founded it in 1921.

As a small group of people, it was able to get away with using a no-power, no-water, no-toilets shed on its site for shelter and meetings.  

“Our croquet club numbers have been increasing in recent years, especially since we started playing Golf Croquet. This version of the game has teams of up to four players on the lawn at a time. It’s much more sociable and more and more people are coming along to play,” Mr Walker said. 

“Waipu Bowling Club is close-by and has been very generous, sharing its own clubroom, toilets, kitchen and other facilities with our group, when a croquet competition is held but with its regular bowls days and tournaments, and our group getting much busier too, it is time to build our own clubrooms,” said Mr Walker. 

The croquet club is open from noon on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays (10:00am in summer) and most members also have keys, for a little bit of sneaky practise in outside those hours.

Many of the members are retired and the club supports croquet clubs and events across the north, often holding weekends away, and competing in other clubs’ tournaments. 

“The new clubrooms will provide a fit-for-purpose facility to accommodate the current and future needs of the club and provide a place for other small group activities in Waipu. It will include a kitchenette, two bathrooms, disability access, and a small deck.”

The club’s submission to Council’s 2018-2028 Long Term Plan was one of those that prompted Council to set up a partnership fund, to support the development of community facilities in the District – including:

  • social enterprise hubs,
  • artisan workshops,
  • rural craft centres,
  • community centres/hubs,
  • multisport and recreation hubs,
  • tourism facilities,
  • and other initiatives that support community. 

Sandra Boardman, Council’s General Manager Community Development said Council had $400,000 to allocate in this, the second year of the fund.

From July next year we will have $600,000 available and the maximum that can be awarded to a single application will be $150,000.
