Community keeping Town Basin clean

The Town Basin has been getting a lot of attention from people keen to keep it spruced up, attracting people and developing a community atmosphere.

In the past month Northland Regional Council staff, Whangarei District Council Parks and Recreation staff, national environmental group Sea Cleaners, and local members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association  (NZMCA) have all pitched in.

Between them they have removed dozens of bags of rubbish, including old bikes, pieces of car, tin, old tyres, cans, bottles and plastic bags.

The most recent clean-up has been the “Spring Clean” a Nation-wide initiative by the (NZMCA), for members to contribute to the well-being of the communities they visit and come to know as they drive around New Zealand.

About 30 members turned out this time, filling large plastic rubbish bags provided by Council with rubbish around the foreshore of the Town Basin.  The bags were later collected by a Whangarei District Council contractor and taken to Re:Sort at no cost.
