Delayed by last month’s heavy storms, work on the Waiarohia Stream cycle/footbridge has now progressed to the point that a date has been set for the opening of it and the loop walkway.

The swivelling opening in the bridge across the Waiarohia
Stream now functions for vessels moving up and down
the stream, and a date has been set for it to be officially
blessed and opened to foot and cycle traffic.

More information about the public opening on Saturday 13 September will be released over the next few weeks.

Public access to the bridge will be restricted until the bridge is officially opened with a dawn blessing by local hapu and a ribbon cutting ceremony by Mayor Sheryl Mai.

Skippers travelling along Waiarohia Stream can ask for the bridge to be opened by contacting Bridge Control on:

  • VHF Radio - Channel 64,
  • Phone 09 438 7261 or 021 401 752.

Vessels less than 2.5m in height above water will not need the bridge to open.

Skippers are to wait for permission from Bridge Control on VHF or phone before proceeding. Those waiting for the bridge to open can tie to the mooring piles at each side of the bridge.
