This page contains information about the upgrade to the Bascule car park.
Updated: 31/10/2018 12:00 a.m.

Sixty-one new carparks, eight campervan parking spaces and 1500 square metres of parkland will be created at Whangarei’s Bascule Carpark next year.

Tenders are being called for the project, which will include:

  • sealing the carpark,
  • installing sustainable stormwater management,
  • new gardens,
  • seating,
  • footpaths,
  • decking,
  • lighting,
  • closed circuit television and
  • a shade structure.

The current drinking fountain, toilets and pop up café will be retained.

The aim is for construction to begin early next year, and some of the funding for the project (price will be revealed after tenders are awarded) will come from Central Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund (TIF).

During the project the carpark will be shut for up to three months, the Hatea Loop will remain open and alternate parking will be at Cobham Oval.

The completed project will be an excellent gateway to the Hatea Loop and provide overflow event parking for the Northland Events Centre.
